Carlisle Cathedral
It is a church.
It is also a cathedral and so it is used by all kinds of folk for all kinds of establishment Christian ceremonies.
As a tool for evangelism it is unequalled in potential. How much of that potential is realised is not for this page to consider. However, proportionally whatever failure it has in evangelism, is certainly no worse than most of Carlisle’s churches.
Carlisle Cathedral is a seven day a week church. Ok, some folk can rightly say that the ‘church’ is the people and not the building. Nevertheless, the church building is open for prayer and worship and the Eucharist ceremony, seven days a week.
Many of the Cathedrals clergy live on the Cathedral grounds and there are other staff available in the daily life of the Cathedral and so there is usually an ear to bend as regards a need.
Many years ago it was revealed to the author of this site that the Cathedral would be the centre of Christian revival in the City of Carlisle.
To those uneducated in the dynamics of Carlisle’s Christian community, such a comment may sound a very reasonable proposition.
For those who know the reality of Carlisle’s Christian community and the diverse and entrenched bigotry and sectarian and liberal elements it harbours, the Cathedral looks an unlikely centre of such a hope that revival encourages.
Nevertheless, that was the word that I believe was given to me and my personal experiences with the power of the Holy Spirit that have become manifest on a number of occasions, lends weight to my own certainty in the matter.
God’s ways are not our ways. The Cathedral is a unique church that not only offers a short cut for many shoppers through its quintessential English grounds, but also offers a shop inside the Cathedral and a restaurant in the Fratry.
Most people who use the Cathedral grounds will not even consider taking a step or two of faith, off their usual course and into the awesome and perhaps daunting architecture of such an ancient and mysterious place of half light.
Yet in only a few moments they could be sitting in silence and in the presence of the omnipresent God of all creation, just as they could by the gentle burbling of a brook, or cuddled up on their own sofa.
Each comfortable place is unique in that it facilitates and stimulates the awareness of the great I AM.
However, to sit alone in a safe place of awesome space and architecture where history and hopes and dreams have been brought before the Holy Spirit, provides an experience that can be taken away with you.
“Peace I give unto you, do not be troubled and do not be afraid”. That was a promise that Jesus has provided for us all because, “’If you seek me, you will find me, when you search for me with all of your heart’” is a promise from God and its integrity and truth are beyond testing.
When we find God, we know peace.

The background sound is a track from the Unity album sung by the (then) Carlisle Cathedral Choir.
The Unity album was produced by Bound Together Ministries to provide a platform for the fabulous musical talent in our Carlisle Christian community.
It was complimented by Unity concerts in some of Carlisle’s churches including Carlisle Cathedral.
